QUEEN KWONG
STRANGERS
SONIC RITUAL
For those unfamiliar with Queen Kwong, behind this moniker is oneย Carrรฉ Kwong Callaway, who has moved from L.A. to London to continue her creative endeavours.
After her three albums and EPs which garnered quiteย bit of attention, she has decided to do Strangers, an all cover EP of male artists, in which she presents a different stylistic approach to The Rolling Stones (โSympathy For The Devilโ), Bruce Springsteen (โState Trooperโ), Chris Isaak (โBaby Did A Bad Bad Thingโ) and The Velvet Underground (โI Found A Reasonโ).
Usually, when doing covers, artists take one of the two approaches – keep things true and faithful with minimal changes to the originals or deconstructing the songs completely and building them piece by piece into something completely new.
Here, Queen Kwong seems to try something that keeps the original spirit and meaning of the songs she covers giving them a different stylistic approach in small, or not so small touches, giving them that personal element that really presents another look (or sound). Well done, for sure.
