SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: NICO PAULO – INTERVAL_O

Nico Paulo

NICO PAULO
INTERVAL_O
FORWARD MUSIC GROUP

Canadian/Portuguese singer songwriter Nico Paulo has one of those mesmerizing voices that strikes within the first notes she starts singing. Yet, the St. John’s, NL-based songwriter works within a middle ground between dream pop and ambient/trip-hop/modern classical music with such an ease, that comes in full perspective on her achingly brief new EP Interval_o.

Paulo’s songs/compositions (and you can also call them meditations) are at the same time both brief and complex, making sure that only the essential musical thoughts are included here. Of course, Paulo’s excellent vocals are at the forefront, with Joshua Van Tessel’s production (he also plays percussion, electronics and ondea) giving Paulo’s music full focus it needs.

In many ways, this EP serves not only as a listening, but also as a meditative experience, and the listener is often left with only one solution – play it again.
