MAURA WEAVER
STRANGE DEVOTION
FEEL IT RECORDS

To devoted fans of pop punk, the name Maura Weaver might sound familiar as she was a member of such an outfit that went under the name of Mixtapes. Weaver decided to leave and pursue a solo career, but it took her some years to get back into it. That return saw some musical changes in Weaver’s approach, as her sophomore album Strange Devotion amply shows.
That pop prefix could be there, but most things punk seem to be long gone, as Weaver focuses on some deep, intricate melody lines and she seems to be doing oh so well with those. Her songs have both a head and a tail, so to say and have that ebb and flow so many good singer songwriters can muster, with her personal lyrics being able to relate to situations most listeners are able to relate to.
An excellent melody rock album which fans of New Zealand’s Flying Nunn Records output should immediately pick up.
