SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: LEA THOMAS – COSMOS FOREVER

Lea Thomas

LEA THOMAS
COSMOS FOREVER
TRIPLE DOLPHIN RECORDS

Dream pop in any shape and form has become a bit of a jaded (sub) genre these days if it is handled by the artists that only go through the motions and simply use it as an empty musical shell.

Yet, when we encounter an artist that employs personal inventiveness, has the right feel for the form, and knows how to express her/his musical ideas through it, we get something that is quite ethereal, enchanting and a pleasure to listen to.

That is exactly what we have within Cosmos Forever, the new album by Catskill, NY-based, Hawai’i-born songwriter Lea Thomas.

Maybe it is that balmy island, high mountain connection that Thomas breathes in here, or just her personal imagination, but Thomas breathes in some of that spiritual, or cosmic thing that she included in the title of her album, but there is a natural, free-flowing feel throughout this album.

It seems that it all flows from Thomas’ intricate songwriting, hushed vocals and excellent arrangements that makes this album one of the better surprises of this season.
