La Sera
Queens EP
Polyvinyl Records
Somewhere in between touring in support of its album Music For Listening to Music To (which I reviewed just this past March HERE), La Sera found the time to record its latest EP, Queens. A longtime fan of Katy Goodman, I jumped at the chance to review the new tunes.
The EP, released September 30 on Polyvinyl Records, opens with classic Goodman style — that catchy sound that immediately makes you need to listen to the rest of the songs. “Queens” is, unsurprisingly, the title track; full of twangy guitar and a steady backbeat, the song’s lyrics take you through a “typical” day in Hollywood.
Not quite as much of a dance tune as “Queens,” the second song “Magic in Your Eyes” is a bit slower in tempo. This is a catchy love song where Goodman’s vocals really take the lead.
Fellow fans of Goodman’s will recognize the La Sera we’ve come to know and love in “Shadow of Your Love (Slight Return).” It is a bit melancholy, giving off the same feelings you have tried to forget post your latest heartbreak. Luring you in with the lyrics, Goodman’s vocals and typical Pop-ballad sound, you can’t deny the snarl and teeth introduced mid-song. This tune was inspired by Music for Listening to Music To, but now appears longer and bit more guitar heavy.
The last track was a bit of a surprise – La Sera has covered “Whole Lotta Love,” and I have to admit, I actually like this version better than the original. A bit more Poppy and a lot shorter, it has almost made an old song seem brand new.
La Sera has begun a US tour in support of Music for Listening to Music To as well as this latest EP. I definitely recommend catching the band when it comes to your town.
