LA LUNE
EVERYTHING IS AN ETERNAL CIRCLE AND IT REPEATS AND REPEATS ITSELF
PLAY DEAD RECORDS

If you are from the Vancouver area or familiar with Vancouver’s music scene than you probably have heard of the shoegaze rockers la lune. Last year, la lune put out their remarkable debut EP disparity, a fabulous combination of shoegaze, alternative rock, emo, and indie rock. Now the band, which consists of Ethan Rebalkin (guitar, vocals), Olivia Wells (bass, vocals), Taylor Pawsey (drums) and Nima Walker (guitar), who recently joined the band this year, have released their second EP titled everything is an eternal circle and it repeats and repeats itself. Their new EP is even better than their debut and sees them experimenting more while still retaining their original sound.
The singles “expressionless” and “quiet considerations” were released to promote the EP. Both are fantastic and see la lune exploring a more expansive maximalist sound. Listeners can easily get lost these mesmerizing tunes. The former is brutally honest and very vulnerable as Rebalkin shares his experience with Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder. Furthermore, the layered production, Rebalkin and Wells’ incredible vocals, melancholic atmosphere, amazing production and sound mixing, and the riveting instrumentation, especially the blown-out guitars make “expressionless” really stand out. The latter has explosively thrilling guitar riffs, aggressive drumming, powerful basslines, and an exhilarating energy. It is a heavy blast of shoegaze that hits hard. However, the soft and gentle sections are just as impressive, especially the gorgeous, lush soundscape and the dreamily soft vocal harmonies between Rebalkin and Wells.
From top to bottom, everything is an eternal circle and it repeats and repeats itself is phenomenal. The album opens with “new swell”, an ambient instrumental track with an extremely catchy acoustic guitar riff. It incorporates lots of background noises/samples, adding an extra layer to the song’s vibe. With “falling to”, la lune takes the listener on a captivating sonic journey. This eclectic song pulls from many different styles and really shows off their creativity, especially the entrancingly melodic outro. Lastly, “the ache” is a dope way to end off the EP, due to its full-throttle conclusion, with the main highlights being the dynamite guitar riffs and the roaring drums.
Overall, la lune’s everything is an eternal circle and it repeats and repeats itself is a must-listen for all shoegaze fans. You will find yourself constantly playing this EP front to back.
