Nothin Like U/Chances is the highly anticipated new release from Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada. The five-track EP is the follow-up from his critically acclaimed debut album 99.9%, which was awarded the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. It has a nostalgic retro appeal, in both the music and the 12β vinyl format, complete with an A/B side and bonus track.
Side A features βNothin Like Uβ with Ty Dolla $ign plus an instrumental version. The song has a light shimmering feel with perfectly timed percussive beats. Dolla $ignβs vocals are a smooth compliment to the seamless musical transitions. Itβs a chilled-out love track with simple yet meticulous grooves.
Shay Liaβs sweet soulful singing shines on Side B in βChancesβ. The rhythmic downtempo creates an easy-listening soundscape in both this version and the instrumental track. βIt Was Meant 2 Bβ serves as a standalone bonus song. It continues the overall ambient mastery that epitomizes Kaytranadaβs distinctive sound.
This release certainly satisfies the insatiable desire for more music from the revered producer, yet still leaves us looking to whatβs next.
