JADEA KELLY
WEATHER GIRL (DELUXE)
TONE TREE MUSIC

It is always great to review an artist from my hometown. Jadea Kelly is from Whitby, Ontario, and in 2008 she made a big splash with her debut album Second Spring. Since then, she has released a further five albums, including Weather Girl, which was released in Oct 2024. Kelly has just re-released the album as a deluxe version, with two new tracks. It is a strong, well-produced album and the two new tracks do draw attention to the album. The music drifts effortlessly from folk to country with a tinge of pop.
Kelly is very comfortable with stripped back, acoustic songs, like “Angels”, which is just her and her guitar. But she is equally at home with a much more produced, pop-country song, such as the opening track “Solo” which has a beautifully paced build-up throughout the song. A song like “Who Wouldn’t Want To Love You” is much more country, with a nice fiddle backing, while “Waiting For You” is almost pure pop music. And it all fits together throughout the album.
She performs a few of beautiful duets on the album, including the moving and brilliant “I Hope We Get To Come Back” with Jenn Grant and “Lake Louise” with Ken Yates. Their voices blend together in such a magical and perfect way. “Without Me”, featuring Erin O’Neill is a yet another example of how Kelly’s fantastic voice is able to blend to create an almost unearthly sound. And, for this writer, the highlight of the album, “Saint Hubert’s Eve (feat. Ryan O’Reilly)”.
It is Kelly’s voice that is the star of that song and the album. Her voice has emotion, power, and it is clear. She creates a beautiful sound in combination with the instruments, and in many ways her voice becomes an instrument. Everything blends together with such beauty.
Weather Girl (Deluxe) gives people another chance to discover this album and talented artist. The two new tracks are a welcome addition to the album, and if it does give Weather Girl (Deluxe) a new lease on life, then that is a great thing.
