SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: HANNAH FREY – LUCKY GIRL

Hannah Frey

HANNAH FREY
LUCKY GIRL
INDEPENDENT

Currently, you could add as many artists as possible daily to the Americana-tinged genre, most of them leaning towards roots/folk/singer-songwriter sound. But what about those that give their music that pop/indie rock touch there?

Well, that is where Chicago’s Hannah Frey comes into play. She prefers her music to be a bit more up-tempo, with focus on the melody and reaching out to the roots side of her music when she feels like it.

After her initial album, White Picket Fence (2019), and two singles in the meantime, she now comes up with her follow up Lucky Girl, with her sound audibly maturing and her lean towards the more indie rock becoming more prominent.

No dad on guitar or mom on harmonies this time around (as on her debut), but her songwriting went a step further in maturity, and her vocals up forefront to a great effect. An assured and effective effort that promises even better things from Frey.
