SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: GRAYMANE – HEAL

Graymane

GRAYMANE
HEAL
DISSIDENT MUSIC

Ephemeral twitches of electronica greet you as Graymane’s track “Heal” wends its way into your consciousness. It’s one of those tracks that can take you wherever it is you want to go. Where that is remains to be seen.

It is the lead track on Graymane’s EP of the same name and debut on Florida’s Dissident Music label, which describes itself as “progressive, deep, and forward thinking sounds for dance floors and beyond.”

“Heal” is accompanied by two complementary and competent remixes. The remixes, which are good, veer from the original, but, stylistically or even genre-wise it would have been more interesting to have remixes that veered further afield. Seth Vogt’s remix is more dance floor friendly, injecting vibrant breakbeat energy while maintaining the depth and melodic flow of the original. Ranj Kaler’s remix includes sweet bird sound samples as he goes deep with a four on the floor version, weaving a nuanced sonic tapestry.

A second track, “Long Road Back,” completes the EP. It shares sonic space with the title track and neatly bookends this EP.

There is a newness to Graymane that is evident by the paucity of information about him. This release definitely represents a new musical path for him. With some early DJ support from the likes of Eelke Klein and Joris Voorn, this EP presents possibility and something to build on.
