SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: FOO FIGHTERS – BUT HERE WE ARE

Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters
But Here We Are
RCA

Writing and recording an album in the wake of two significant losses in one year is not easy, but Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters turned their pain into something beautiful. Their 11th album, But Here We Are debuted at number eight on Billboard’s 200. Front man Grohl stepped in and played drums on all 10 tracks as a shout out to his beloved friend and bandmate, drummer Taylor Hawkins, who left this world too early last year in 2022.

“Rescued” is the first release of the album. The lyrics are phenomenal, and Grohl’s drumming comes through loud and clear. “Under You” is a touching tribute to Hawkins and “Show Me How” is a toned-down track featuring Grohl’s teenage daughter Violet’s vocals.

“The Teacher” is a powerful and emotional tribute to one of Grohl’s biggest supporters. While mourning the loss of Hawkins, he lost his mother Virginia. As the song closes it distorts while he screams “goodbye” to her. The accompanying video features hundreds of images and footage of Grohl from his childhood and footage of being on the road.

The album closes with “Rest”, a beautiful expression of Grohl’s grief for all the loved ones he’s lost. The entire album is so full of raw emotion and purpose that you can’t help but do your own reflection throughout.

About the Author
Melinda Welsh
Melinda is a music enthusiast from the US who grew up on vinyl in the 70s and 80s. She's a lover of all genres, but rock/metal runs through her veins. Music is always in the background and in her head. Unfortunately, she has to have a "regular 8-5" job since "Professional Concert Go-er" doesn't pay the bills. Her bliss would be to follow more musicians and bands than "People she may know" on social media. Her ultimate long term goal is to be the old lady just enjoying the show down in front at the barricades at live shows. Her favorite quote is "Where words fail, music speaks".
