Dex Wolfe
Vestiges
Independent
Back in 2020, we had this to say about Dex Wolfe’s music: “Brief musical notes conjuring all the better sides of David Byrne, Sparklehorse, and Sufjan Stevens work some real polymath magic.”
Ok, some big words, but then the music quite matched those words in our opinion. So, what has changed in Dex Wolfe’s music three years on with his latest album offering Vestiges.
Well, on one hand, not much, and that is a good thing, since that ‘not much refers to high quality of Wolfe’s music, his penchant for (relatively) brief musical notes, and the personal fragile and elegant compositional style that remains intact.
On the other hand, it seems that Wolfe’s songwriting style has matured even further, with him incorporating more complex elements within his music and taking on some intricate arrangements, like on βWeatherwaxβ here. That also means that Wolfe expanded his musical vignettes (still present) with some detailed compositions that present him now as a fully grown artist from we can expect much more.
