SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CUDDLE MAGIC – UNDERWATER

Cuddle Magic

CUDDLE MAGIC
UNDERWATER
EGGHUNT RECORDS

Is there such a thing as ambient folk or folky dream pop, or both? Of course, there is a resounding yes there, as bands and artists like Big Thief have amply shown, and now you can add Cuddle Magic to that slowly growing list of artists bringing sophisticated sounds that have ample dynamics without going loud (or not too loud, to be precise).

On Underwater, their latest effort, the band shows what you can achieve with some soft, subtle vocal harmonies and detailed and equally subtle arrangements, that initially might sound simple, but turn into something intricately complex as their songs evolve, and they seem to be doing it with a lot of inventiveness and an easy going attitude that is oh so hard to achieve right, but they do it anyway.
Intricate and quite delicate music, embellished with some excellent arrangements, that brings up a new element with every new listen.
