CHARLIE KAPLAN
A HAT UPON THE BED
GLAMOUR GOWNS

If you’re an avid reader of Spill Magazine, you have certainly come across Charlie Kaplan’s name at one point or another. Along with some nifty albums, Kaplan is also the bassist of Office Culture, as well as the founder of the Glamour Gowns record label. So, it is not really a surprise that Kaplan’s new album, A Hat Upon the Bed, is getting its release on the record label he founded.
While listening to the album, and also considering Kaplan’s solo records to date, you quickly realize that, despite the self-released record label fact, there’s not a shred of nepotism in sight. Kaplan, yet again, delivers a set of quirky and off-kilter lo-fi bedroom pop that veers into quite a few directions. It does all this without losing its train of thought or Kaplan’s penchant for snappy one-liners. The selection of collaborators, including Winston Cook-Wilson (Office Culture) and Julian Cubillos (Okkervil River, The Antlers, Little Mystery), among many others, fit Kaplan’s concept here to a tee. All of this proves that Charlie Kaplan has done it again, releasing another great album into his already-phenomenal discography.
