BLINKER THE STAR
ANIMAL MATH
INDEPENDENT
Animal Math is Blinker The Star’s 12th studio album and their fifth since 2019! That is a lot of music over the past few years. It is a rather brilliant collection of all new originals by Jordon Zadorozny. Although he enlists a great deal of help, he is really Blinker The Star.
The beauty of the album is the variety of music found in the grooves. The opening track, for example, “Like A Banshee”, brings to mind the post punk, new wave goth, such as early Cure and Siouxsie and The Banshees. The opening line sets the stage, “Follow the footsteps in the shifting sand” Zadorozny is making his statement. Although the album has the feel and sound of previous Blinker The Star albums, there are going to be some changes. And he has the talent and ability to pull it off. And this is proven with the second track, the incredible melodic and guitar driven “Swimming In The Same Fire”. Here the backing vocals add a whole new dimension and the song soars.
Zadorozny is joined by co-writer Allan Epley on the very moving “Throwing Dice”. There are a couple of pop songs included in the set, “Funny Love” and “Call Me The Wolf”. Both are pleasant songs and welcome additions. The closing track, however, brings it all together. The epic “Sweet Teeth” is very musical and provides Zadorozny the chance to improvise and construct a brilliant song. Although he plays the lion’s share of the instruments, his guests, such as Paul D’Amour (guitars), Jarek Leskiewicz (guitars) and John Fields (synthesizers, guitars) add a great deal throughout.
Blinker The Star has always played by their own rules, and Zadorozny has vision for his sound. Animal Math is another example of his talent. To these ears, this is one of Blinker The Star’s strongest albums and demonstrates Zadorozny’s talent as a musician, writer, and producer. Here, with his own album, one can see that he is bursting with creativity and excitement. One gets the sense that although some of the songs are heavy and sad, he is having fun and enjoying making music.
