APAULL
HOMOGENY (REMIXES)
FURNACE ROOM RECORDS

The Dutch Canadian electronica artist apaull has dropped another load of tunes. This time, he brings us remixes of music from his February 2025 release, Homogeny. Designed for the dance floor, the remixes here mostly exist to create cool grooves around apaull’s pieces, and rightly so! In such an enterprise, there is a certain trade-off at play, where something is gained, and something is lost. The artist’s original vision may get shifted or skewed, but that is entirely the point. One form of creativity is being sacrificed for another, and the result is very cool indeed.
In the leadoff track “Anti-Science,” producer Neil Landstrumm pays respect to the original, with a more hypnotic dance groove, and that track really works well. The same may be said of Ross Harper’s remix of “Entropic,” with its inventive looped intro. As its purpose is for the dance floor, the track demonstrates somewhat less variety and dynamic range than the original. Effects and instrumental bits fly in seemingly randomly here, with 8-bit sounds at odds with the programmed track. It makes for some interesting sonic tension, all held together with the driving rhythm track.
It is interesting to have so many producers/artists involved in this project, giving various perspectives and treatments to apaull’s work. Witness the Christian Smith remix of “LCD,” with its mesmeric percussion track, or the ghostly and trance-inducing quality of Signal Deluxe’s remix of “Distorted Information,” which builds to a frenetic climax. Interestingly, we are graced with two separate mixes of “5g” from Neil Landstrumm, displaying that producer’s deft handling of the source material. Listen for the cool break and the inventive embellishments.
One of apaull’s trademarks is his world view, which usually presents a dystopian perspective, elevating the mundane, and holding a mirror up to capitalism, government systems, and society at large. While there are fewer of those qualities on this collection, the work here acts as a palette cleanser, preparing us for a new crop of apaull originals. Hopefully, soon!
