AUDIOGUST – FALLING FROM DOWN
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE ALBUM PREMIERE
It’s been a minute since we first introduced our readers to Seattle indie rocker AudioGust aka. Chris Evans and his loaded album Here We Go Again. Not even a year later and here we are, already eager for the rollout of his third album Falling From Down .
This album deserves a listen—particularly if you’re drawn to the emotional depth of artists like Elliott Smith, Pearl Jam, the Gin Blossoms, or Dave Matthews Band. AudioGust delivers infectious, feel-good rock with lyrics that balance introspection and hope.
Evans is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer, who previously cut his teeth in ’80s bands, he took a long detour in the software industry. There’s so much to take in here. With this album, AudioGust is at the top of his game with this full-loaded sonic smorgasbord worthy of an entire college radio show. Definitely a worthwhile listen.
Now back with a zealous focus, AudioGust brings the latest installment of their hallmark sound and strong, driving rhythm sections, big choruses, and the compelling influences of ’90s to 2000s alt-rock. Also recently, Evans was also a finalist in the 2024 USA Songwriting Contest.
“Falling From Down explores the struggles of modern life, from hitting rock bottom to finding small moments of hope and connection. This record is about what it feels like to live through times when you think you’ve already hit bottom, but then it somehow keeps getting worse. The songs trace that cycle — the collapse, the coping, the hope you hold onto anyway, and the moments of beauty you find even in the middle of chaos,” says Chris Evans.
“The phrase ‘falling from down’ captures that feeling when you think things can’t possibly get worse, and then they do. It’s heavy, but it’s also about resilience — sticking it out and finding a way forward even when the bottom keeps dropping.”
Falling From Down, AudioGust’s latest offering, is a talented, profound and unflinching reflection on the current zeitgeist, immediately positioning itself as a sonic diagnosis of modern collapse and the fragile yet persistent drive for survival. The band retains the melodic hooks and potent storytelling for which they are recognized, but this collection showcases their hardest edge yet. Combining raw, unadulterated rock intensity with the emotionally resonant power of post-grunge and modern rock, the music plunges the listener into the exhausting reality of modern life. From the heavy opening track “Isotope” to the self-aware title track, the first half of the record is a masterclass in tension, capturing the relentless grind of isolation and societal pressure with honesty and grit.
The album’s mood shifts subtly yet pivotally following the restless tension of “Easier,” where the longing for freedom suggests a necessary change in perspective. While the overall narrative refuses to offer convenient resolutions, a genuine sense of open-ended hope begins to permeate the soundscape. Several tracks, including ‘You At My Door (feat. Liliana Tani)’ and “Thousand Reasons (feat. Kelsey Grant),” explore moments of connection, personal growth, and the small, meaningful victories necessary to persevere. Crucially, the record is elevated by the stunning, dimensional performances from the two featured women vocalists, a welcome evolution and significant enhancement compared to AudioGust’s earlier, more singular musical approach. Their collaborations on these tracks, which focus on love and vulnerability, inject a vital counterpoint of grace and light into this music, which reflects the roller coaster effects of our current civilization.
Even as the collection moves toward its conclusion, it fiercely resists descending into clean-cut, saccharine endings. Songs like “No Place For This” serve as sharp, insistent reminders of external realities—violence and hypocrisy—snapping the emotional journey back to the present moment. AudioGust, however, saves its most powerful statement for the finale. The closing track, “own By The River,” culminates the journey not in a sudden triumph, but in a flickering, quiet beauty found amidst the chaos. It is a moment of pure, defiant survival, sung with both grit and surprising elegance, cementing Falling From Down as AudioGust’s most sophisticated and emotionally complex release to date.
