The Black Rainbows
I Met This Chick… EP
Independent
This homegrown Toronto-trio have definitely got enough boisterous charm. With their debut EP release, The Black Rainbows have created a new way to scare teens away from intercourse. I Met This Chick… is a compilation of strangely inappropriate songs about amateur boys with way too much sexual tension pretending they don’t give a fuck.
The sound produced along with the horribly cliché and morbid subject matter is highly reminiscent of old school British Pop/Punk. Although slightly off kilter, as a whole, this EP forces you to swivel and shake like a drunken foreigner. The energy is undeniable and the mixing turns out to be strangely clever. You get to feel the angst of the Pop/Punk, the misery of the heavy and the feel good of the country and upbeat drums.
It’s clear how very dirty and raw these gentlemen are in every aspect of their musical creation, and with some fine tuning and perhaps more grown up approach on the lyrical side The Black Rainbows have a lot of packed pubs ahead of them. But for now, just learn how to master jumping up and down with a pint in your hand and you’ll enjoy this just fine.
