Album Review: Purity Ring – Shrines

Purity Ring
Shrines

RATING

Purity Ring’s eerie and direful sound is certainly what draws such a big audience; they are mysterious, highly talented and simply irresistible. The band is fresh and modern with comparisons to Yeasayer, Massive Attack and Grimes. Purity Ring has made a huge splash on the new music scene over the past 12 months and they’re just getting started. Megan Jame’s beautiful voice, coupled with Corin Roddick’s impeccable Dream Pop programming skills, make for a fierce duo that will get you hooked in no time. The Montreal duo’s debut release Shrines will simply blow your mind.

There’s no arguing that “Belispeak” is the best tune of the album, it is their go-to single at the moment with an absolutely stunning music video that adds creepiness and intrigue to the song and must be checked out. “Amenamy” is another stand out track that delivers beastly voices and killer club beats intermingled so nicely with Jame’s voice to create an oriental-tinged hit. The beastly voices return in the song “Lofticries”; this song is slow and steady with intense synth hooks. It’s a catchy, dark, track that is impeccable production. My only demerit points come on the song “Grandloves” where Young Magic makes a guest appearance — his guest spot didn’t add much flavour to the song or the album.

Shrines is a must for fans of the bands mentioned above. Purity Ring have simply outdone themselves here.

About the Author
Andre Skinner
André has been writing for The Spill Magazine for over 20 years, dating back to the print days. As a full time video producer for Long & McQuade, André is often seen hosting and demoing new gear on L&M’s YouTube channel. His passion for music goes far beyond writing reviews for new music and live concerts, he is also an active musician and producer on the Canadian music scene. Having toured North America and Europe with various acts, he is no stranger to dedication and work ethic new bands must endure to make the grade in today's market; Andre always delivers perspective writing that is authentic and to the point. Mr. Skinner typically covers indie rock, grass roots, electronica and is our resident hard rock and heavy metal specialist. He is extremely selective on what bands he covers for articles and you can rest assured they are ALWAYS band to watch with something left of centre to offer.
