SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SEXTILE – YES, PLEASE

Sextile

SEXTILE
YES, PLEASE
SACRED BONES

LA’s electronic punk techno rave two-piece Sextile are back with their new album yes, please, and they’ve managed to push their sound even further on this infectious collection of beat-pounding songs.

We’re introduced to the album with a short track just titled “Intro” that is a wall of sound with sirens ringing in the background that wouldn’t be out of place on a Fatboy Slim album.

The order of tracks on an album can really make or break the experience for the listener, especially at the start, but it’s clear that these tracks were carefully curated. The second track we’re thrown into is “Women Respond to Bass” and it’s here where the tone for the album is really set and doesn’t really stray from until the very end. You can almost feel the bass just by reading the title of the song. This can be said about the single “Freak Eyes” as well as almost every track on the album. They all grab you by the throat with their simple, yet danceable beats mixed with unconventional synths.

Of course, you need all these elements to come together to create a great album, and what takes it over the top is the exceptional vocal performance by Melissa Scaduto. Each line is such a hook, and more memorable than the last; it barely takes one playthrough to get them stuck in your head. This is really highlighted on tracks like “Kids” and “S is For”.

Sextile’s Sophomore album on Sacred Bones sees the duo elevate every aspect of their sound and put forth an early contender for one of the best dance albums of the year.
