CAROLINE STRICKLAND
MARTHA’S CALLING
INDEPENDENT

The thing is in the nuances and in the songwriting process. With some songwriters it is instinctive, often easy flowing and feels as if it comes out of nowhere. With others, like the legendary Leonard Cohen, it is a detailed, thought-out process that takes some serious time to develop a song.
By the five detailed, slow-burning songs that comprise Martha’s Calling, the new EP by Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Caroline Strickland and the way she explains them herself, you would guess that it is the latter process when she gets down to songwriting and recording her music.
Well, maybe it is a combination of the two, but whatever the case is, her music has that ‘the devil’s in the detail’ sound, whether it is in her music or it is in the lyrics (usually both), that makes listening to her music something of enjoying them and thinking about them, and at the same time experiencing them, something that is not so easy to encounter these days.
