TOBACCO CITY
HORSES
SCISSOR TAIL RECORDS

The term cosmic country has been flying around since the time it was coined by late Gram Parsons. And while quite a few artists have been given that label, not that many truly deserved to hold it when their music is being described.
Essentially, it is usually a question of how such an artist/band balances the country and psychedelia elements (old or new, makes no difference) in their music. It all just might be a bit hard to define with just words but is quite audible when you run into it.
And it is something you will definitely run into listening to Horses, the second album by Chicago’s Tobacco City. Here, the core band is supported by ‘a cast of thousands’ (well, not really, just a few friends), but what comes through is a unified, spaced-out sound that just has that cosmic feel many try, but very rarely are able to fully achieve. And, yes, damn the labels, when the music is as good as this.
