ERISY WATT
NOT EITHER OR BUT EVERYTHING
FIRST CITY ARTISTS
As a singer songwriter in that late 60s, early 70s, there are two ways to go about creating your music. You can strictly stick to the ‘old’ cannons and stick to the form as it was set then or, you can try to ‘modernize’ that sound by including more contemporary musical elements, either by increments, or by completely overhauling your view of the genre.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Erisy Watt started out by sticking to old templates on her initial releases. Yet on her third album, not either or but everything, Watt seems to have decided to bring her music into more contemporary musical settings without completely severing the connection to the original context of singer songwriter genre.
A wise move in many ways, as Watt has that sensitive songwriting touch so fit for the genre, as well as a voice and lyrics to come up with music that is equally fitting for the genre and innovative enough to make it sound fresh and new.
Part of that good balance may lie in the production by Luke Temple (Adrianne Lenker, among others), but the key still lies with Watt herself, who has created a truly modern singer-songwriter album.
