When you have been hailed as one of the key players in the neo-psychedelia for such a long time, at some point you have to go back and look at where, when, how, and surely why, you were influenced by that original psych sound, or sounds that touch upon it, if you will.
That is the case of Robyn Hitchcock and his latest project 1967: Vacations In The Past, which includes a book the accompanying album where Hitchcock covers 12 of his favourite songs from that particular seminal year.
“These songs are folk songs now”, is Hitchcock’s summary of the record: “And I hope they sound like them. They’re the soundtrack of when the world went into colour, and the child I was hatched into a teenager.”
It is easy to assume that in the book Hitchcock fully explains his ideas and mindset that turned him to the music he covers both in the book and the album, but the album has both that specific Hitchcock sound and retains the soul of the songs he covers here, something that becomes more and more evident with every listen.
