WAYNE GRAHAM
BASTION
WATERLOO RECORDS
No, Wayne Graham is not a singer-songwriter, nor is he a single person (in this case at least)—Wayne Graham is a band from Kentucky, and Bastion is their ninth and latest album.
The quartet picked the band name by combining first names of the leading duo’s (brothers Kenny and Hayden Miles) grandfathers names, and that is not where somewhat left-field ideas end here.
Maybe left-field is a misnomer, but the Miles brothers along with José Oreta and Germany-based instrumentalist Ludwig Bauer are intent on bringing some intriguing, fresh sounds into the ever-widening Americana/roots genre, by bringing in elements such as shoegaze and even jazz to their playing field here (try “I Had Plans” for size).
And the fact that they have nine albums under their belt helps them quite a bit, because it sounds like they know exactly what they are doing, as they seem to have developed such a good touch, coming up with some sophisticated music here.
