SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: RISING APPALACHIA – FOLK & ANCHOR

Rising Appalachia

RISING APPALACHIA
FOLK  & ANCHOR
INDEPENDENT

Doing a covers album is far from easy, as some might think. You don’t simply sit down or stand up and cover a song you want and/or love. An emotional connection to the song is not enough. You really have to understand the essence of a specific song, and at the same time, you have to have your take on it.

Now, in most cases, artists take a song from decades ago (or earlier) and apply their current state of mind and artistry to it. But what if the artists, in this case the sister duo that goes under the name of Rising Appalachia, takes a set of songs of a relatively fresh songs well, a solid batch as in the case of their new covers’ album Folk & Anchor, and apply to all of them an ‘old’ folk take throughout?

Could have turned out to be a complete disaster, but sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, not only love and understand the songs they have taken on, from Dylan to Beyonce, from Hozier to Bon Iver, and elsewhere, but also the traditional folk and country into which they dress all of them, making their sparse acoustic instrumentation and exquisite dual harmonies shine throughout, Excellent to say the least.
