COLOUR FILM
HALF AN HOUR
INDEPENDENT
Matthew de Zoete, Hamilton, ON singer-songwriter, has been around for a while (since 2006, to be precise) and has been quietly making some sublime sounds ever since.
Yet behind quietly lies the fact that Half An Hour is de Zoete’s first album in quite a while, itself being recorded prior to 2020 with a delayed release due to an serious injury de Zoete suffered in the meantime.
It would truly be a shame if this album didn’t come about, as de Zoete’s ability to create a hazy (yes coloured) atmosphere with both his music and lyrics is in full swing here.
He so easily picks up simple elements and puts them together with such a touch that make those simple elements create that atmosphere and sound that he seems to be going for. Yes, it is music that falls squarely into the singer songwriter genre, but so thoughtfully done that it escapes all the mundane tendencies this genre presents as such.
It is one of those albums that somehow just stick around, without the listener even noticing that the replay button has been pressed more than once.
