50th Anniversary Live – First Night is the first of three albums that Blue Öyster Cult is releasing, that was recorded during their three 50th Anniversary shows at Sony Hall in New York City. On the first night, the band performed their debut album from beginning to end. The second half of the show had some deep cuts and hits for the fans.

Blue Öyster Cult released many classic albums, and their debut is no exception. It stands as a classic example of hard rock and rock combined to make harder rock more accessible and eventually fit onto AM airwaves. Here, they tore into the album with a great deal of energy and excitement. Their performance of “I’m On The Lamb But I Ain’t No Sheep” really comes alive and sounds fantastic. The same can be said for the majority of the performance. This performance is exciting and vital. “Screams” is another great example of the energy the band brings to these older songs.

The second half of the concert allowed the band to dig into their catalogue. Big hits and deep cuts are performed with a great deal of energy and fun. It is so great to hear “Godzilla” among the more serious classics, such as “Burning For You” and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”. And the deep cuts keep things very interesting. “Tainted Blood” from their 2020 album The Symbol Remains is better live, and “Dancin’ In The Ruins” from 1985’s Club Ninja is a song that cries out for attention and should be a classic. It is an interesting collection of songs taken from their incredible and brilliant catalogue.

Blue Öyster Cult continues to be a working and touring band. There is a reason they have released so many live albums. Though they have a great sound in the studio, it is on the stage that they have always delivered the goods. It is not surprising that these three concerts are being released. This particular album sounds like a live album. You can hear the sweat from the band.

Blue Öyster Cult is a band that is still relevant and vital. 50th Anniversary Live – First Night  goes a long way in proving that, and the next two releases are going to be equally interesting. This is a great example of how great a live album can sound.
