SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: EVANESCENCE – FALLEN (20th ANNIVERSARY EDITON)

Evanescence

EVANESCENCE
FALLEN (20th ANNIVERSARY EDITON)
CRAFT RECORDINGS

Internationally renowned American hard rock band Evanescence is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album Fallen this year by reissuing a deluxe, remastered, and expanded edition.

Vocalist Amy Lee’s three octave vocal range, alongside the powerful and sometimes chilling lyrics, are just exactly as you remember. Lee was heavily influenced by classical music, and since Lee was the core writer for the album, it can be heard in nearly every track. The remastered tracks have a sharper sound that really brings out those classical influences.

In addition to remastering the original tracks, we get previously unreleased versions of fan favorites “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal”, as well as the addition of three remastered B-side tracks. “Breathe No More” features Lee on the piano delivering her striking vocals in a softer song describing her recovering from a toxic relationship. We also get the demo version of “Bring Me to Life”, which is vastly different than the radio and album versions which featured Paul McCoy from the band 12 Stones. The haunting instrumentals and intense guitar riffs in “My Immortal” are still comforting, and out of four different recordings heard on this release, one is a previously unreleased strings version which brings in a soothing and beautiful orchestra to replace the breakdown in the original version.

This album has been the soundtrack to millions of fans’ lives around the globe. The beautiful blend of classical music and hard rock is just as haunting as it was 20 years ago, and for those who know the album musically in its entirety, it’s exciting to hear all the enhancements that make this beautifully remastered version worth the number of hours fans around the world spent listening to it over the last 20 years.

About the Author
Melinda Welsh
Melinda is a music enthusiast from the US who grew up on vinyl in the 70s and 80s. She's a lover of all genres, but rock/metal runs through her veins. Music is always in the background and in her head. Unfortunately, she has to have a "regular 8-5" job since "Professional Concert Go-er" doesn't pay the bills. Her bliss would be to follow more musicians and bands than "People she may know" on social media. Her ultimate long term goal is to be the old lady just enjoying the show down in front at the barricades at live shows. Her favorite quote is "Where words fail, music speaks".
