SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: IN THE PINES – PAINTING BY NUMBERS

In The Pines

IN THE PINES
PAINTING BY NUMBERS
INDEPENDENT

Working on the edges of indie rock while crossing over into Americana one moment and post-grunge and psych (and elsewhere) on the other,  is not new but is not easy to do well.

Sure, there are champions of that among the bands such as Wilco who comes to mind first, but there are others that have something quite interesting to say too, Cincinnati’s In The Pines being one of them.

That is exactly what they do on their latest album Painting By Numbers, and they actually do it with ease, as if it was like drinking a glass of water. For example, they take the Americana way on the opener “Threshold”, make their steps a bit heavier on “Speaking In Tongues” and then take a rocket glider to space on “Weeping Willow”. And then they simply repeat the process further on, venturing wherever their imagination takes them at that moment.

Still, it all sounds coherent and unified, signaling that all the steps In The Pines have taken are the right ones.
