SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JENNY OWEN YOUNGS – AVALANCHE

Jenny Owen Youngs

JENNY OWEN YOUNGS
AVALANCHE
YEP ROC RECORDS

There might not have been an album for a decade from Jenny Owen Youngs until Avalanche, her latest, but that doesn’t mean that she was standing still. In those ten years, she’s toured the world, co-written a #1 hit single, launched a wildly popular podcast, landed a book deal, placed songs into a slew of films and television series, moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to coastal Maine, and gotten married, divorced, and married again.

Of course, all that went on in her life during this period figures in the songs she presents here, something she does with such elegance and ease, shining brightly over the cast of great supporters here – Avalanche was produced by Josh Kaufman (The National, The Hold Steady) and features co-writes with Christian Lee Hutson, Madi Diaz, and The Antlers’ Peter Silberman, and drumming from The Walkmen’s Matt Barrick.

Yet it is a Jenny Owen Youngs album throughout, showcasing her ability to craft excellent songs and focusing on her vocals and lyrics that shine throughout.
