Being a touring guitar technician for the likes of Wilco, Patti Smith, CSN&Y, Paul Simon, Lucinda Williams and My Morning Jacket can actually make you quite a select group of friends when you want to make a record of your own.

Just by looking at the names Rocky Roberts worked during his ‘day job’ you can get the idea where his 4-song EP Pieces Of Time is headed – sophisticated Americana-tinged variations that can either deserve that sophisticated tag or end up in the musical wallpaper category.

Roberts however uses that ‘friends’ category well, bringing in the likes of Norah Jones and Carl Broemel on guitar, but his music here doesn’t rely just on big-name friends as he has songwriting, playing, and singing capabilities to make the four songs here work exactly as they should. Hopefully, Roberts will spend a bit more time in the studio from now on.
