Leon Russell was one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians in the rock ’n’ roll era. The list of artists he collaborated with is a who’s who of the music world, especially during his days playing piano as a session musician with The Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles, and he achieved chart success numerous times over his career both as a performer and as a songwriter. Elton John has cited Russell as the single biggest influence on his career.

This historical context is important when looking at Signature Songs, a posthumous release of Russell’s music by Dark Horse Records. This collection of 11 of his songs offers stripped-down versions which feature Russell, his piano, and occasionally some background vocals and very sparse percussion.

Many musicians, myself included, feel that a good song is still a good song even when reduced to its barest essence. This is evident from the first track, “A Song For You”, which has Russell alone at the piano. His vocals range from soft to soaring with a full-sounding accompaniment, all in the space of three and a half minutes.

Russell, by virtue of his experience as an elite session musician, was able to switch styles seamlessly. “Tight Rope” offers more jazz-oriented piano stylings reminiscent of the vaudeville days interspersed with blocked chords, and the song works perfectly pared down like this.

Earlier in the review I mentioned that on these performances Russell was occasionally using sparse percussion. In “Lady Blue” the addition of a shaker adds a subtle hint of rhythm that is barely noticeable but is nonetheless essential.

Without question, the music on Signature Songs is brilliant, and Dark Horse Records has released a loving tribute. Casual listeners may not be engaged due to the intimacy of the arrangements, but fans of Leon Russell will be delighted.
