As a 30-yr chapter of writing music is closing for the American rock band Godsmack, they release their 8^th album, Lighting Up The Sky. The band’s vocalist Sully Erna announced last year that this would be their last. The rock legends have had a hell of a run for the better part of 30 years, and they’re going out with a bang.

The album opens with “You And I”, a smooth-sounding, bluesy tune with sort of an Alice In Chains vibe that is very soothing, and guitarist Tony Rombola delivers a beautiful and touching solo.

“Surrender” is fun, energetic, and punchy. They couldn’t have picked a better lead release. “Truth” is a lovely piano ballad about infidelity and heartbreak.

“The Best Of Times” is a thank you to everyone who’s been there for the nearly 30-yr ride of Godsmack’s existence, and everyone that changed Erna’s life along the way. How he was able to take all the right words and create such a beautiful, heartfelt thank you is amazing. Though this is the end, he hints that the best of times are still to come.

The whole album blends together beautifully as it tells a life story that has all the right amount of love and loss, dedication, and bonding. Shannon Larkin’s mighty drumming is powerful, Erna, (bassist Robbie) Merrill, and Rombola’s guitars compliment each other so well, and Erna’s guttural, raw vocals drive it home. If this is the last time we get anything new from Godsmack, at least the band left us with a legacy that will keep us sustained until we meet them again out on the road.
