SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JUNK DRAWER – THE DUST HAS COME TO STAY

The Dust Has Come To Stay
Art For Blind Records

These days, it seems that the sort of guitar-driven alternative art rock is on a back burner, not many new artists taking the quite tricky road Television and/or Galaxie 500 took in their prime. Those favouring such a sound need not worry too much, as Junk Drawer, a quartet from Belfast, Northern Ireland, decided that there is much on offer by pursuing that sound, which they give ample examples of on their latest EP The Dust Has Come to Stay.

While it is not certain whether the dust they have in mind refers to their sound here, they prove that there’s nothing dusty, worn out, or old about it, and that it certainly deserves to stay, for sure.

The sound Junk Drawer comes up with here is certainly something that can be called sophisticated, somewhat quirky, guitar pop, that definitely veers on the lines of both Galaxie 500 (“Tears in Costa”) and Television (“Railroad King”), but the Lennox brothers and their two companions exude enough of their own personality here to make them a modern guitar pop band to be on the lookout for.
