Sometimes, album covers can be deceptive, other times, they can be dead on. This is particularly true of albums that contain some form of ambient music and all the shapes and forms it comes in. In the case of Australian composer/musician Alex Albrecht and his most recent album Resolve, latter is certainly the case.

Combining field recordings, improvisational piano and ambient electronics, Albrecht is exploring dreams and all things unconscious, and as his press release says, the way we perceive and recall memories and experiences.

Actually, the album cover expresses exactly that and the music that lies within some weirdly-shaped top of stairs, with plant pots under a combination of odd, subdued lights. On one hand, all are ‘standard’ objects, but are set in a combination that describes some sort of subconscious, dreamlike situation.

That is exactly the music Albrecht comes up on Resolve – acoustic piano is interspersed with found sounds and electronics that by themselves could be considered as ‘standard’ but Albrecht arranges them in such a combination that are almost perfectly suited for dreamlike, subconscious states.

Play this one at bedtime and add a soundtrack to your dreams.
