Colouring books for grown ups have become a “thing”. Here’s one with an additional twist .. this book features original designs by Martin ‘Youth’ Glover from Killing Joke. The beautiful illustrations are taken directly from Glover’s sketchbooks, and are what he refers to as ‘free form ink drawings’, a series of Dadaist surrealist , psychedelic sketches. The book is printed on thick, high quality A4 paper.
“There are no corrections, this keeps the work present, tight and authentic. The drawings chosen are characterised by their intimacy and are an extraordinary mash up of the mundane and controversial images we are subjected and bombarded with every day …referencing everything from pop media to art, religion and politics… throughout history.”
“There is a magical and shamanic theme throughout, themes of metamorphism transcendence and transformation are very clear and the anthropomorphic creatures suggest a deeper connection and a sensual relationship to nature and wild native wisdom. Youth’s intense and psychological extreme themes explore identity, sexuality, class, death and love. By drawing fluid, definitive lines, Youth makes a complex statement about the relationship of representation through imagination.”
Record producer Glover is also the bass player and a founding member of The Killing Joke, and along with Paul McCartney is member of The Firemen.
The book can currently be purchased from both the Youth Bandcamp page, as well as UK publication The Idler. Purchase of the book from the Bandcamp website also offers downloading of eight original ambient tracks recorded by Youth over the years. A hard copy ordered from The Idler delivers an autographed copy signed by Glover himself.
