UNWOMAN – “NUMBER 1 CRUSH”
A Spill Exclusive Music Premiere
Unwoman is an anachrofuturistic electric cellist/singer-songwriter. With bittersweet waltzes and post-apocalyptic love songs, Unwoman has been a featured favorite at major steampunk, goth, and sci-fi-related events all over North America. She has self-produced seven albums. Unwoman has also performed with Voltaire, Abney Park, Amanda Palmer, Rasputina, Stripmall Architecture, and Vernian Process, among many others.
This enormous collection is arranged more thematically than chronologically. It includes almost three years worth of cover songs I made for Patreon/Bandcamp subscribers, many of them chosen by me, many by my backers themselves.
Iβve covered some lofty greats here. Some people hate that I dare to tread hallowed ground but Iβve been practicing at not caring for a quarter century, since I played βHurtβ at the talent show in ninth grade.
I got in a fight with someone I was dating a few years ago, when I jokingly mentioned I might be Ian Curtis (who died a few months before my birth) reincarnated, and he said βHow dare you compare yourself to such a lyrical genius,β and I said, βYou donβt have to agree with me, but *I MUST* think Iβm on par with the greatest songwriters and performers, otherwise I would never have the guts to make a a goddamn thing.β
Still, it is a relief when the Leonard Cohen and David Bowie covers are ones that my audience (ie my $2+ Patreon backers) have demanded I cover, by popular vote. I do my absolute damnedest to play them well, but the pressure is off in terms of those assholes who want to say βhow very dare you cover this song, originally written by a genius man, little girl.β Iβm just giving the people what they want!
Artist Quote
“One of the things I like best in a cover is when the nostalgia of the song and its meaning are contextualized dramatically. Of course #1 Crush was a favorite track of mind as a teen β I heard it at a goth club recently and instantly imagined making a cover for some creepy-as-fuck movie trailer, so of course I had to do it.” ~Erica Mulkey (Unwoman)
