SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BETTY MOON – CHROME

Betty Moon
Chrome
Evolver Music

Betty Moon returns with her eighth album and she continues to do what she does best, produce danceable, melodic pop music. Chrome is a well put together album full of beats, rhythms and strong vocals from Moon herself.

Born in Toronto, but now based in Los Angeles, Moon has carved a name for herself since debuting in 1991. Over the years she has adapted and changed her sound to fit the times. This is not a ’90s artist trying to keep up with the times, this is an artist who is growing and evolving with every step in her career.

This album is full of catchy songs which Moon delivers like a pro. Her voice is in top form and she knows how to handle the energy and flow of the music. She matches it perfectly. This is pure energy, pure fun and pure dance pop.

Moon is not trying to save the world or write anything remotely political. She is all about the excitement of life and this is conveyed both in the lyrics and the music. Not that all the songs are happy and fun, but they have that groove that you know that by the end of the song, everything will be fine,  and as McCartney once asked, “What’s wrong with that.” Although not political, the world could use a little release and fun these days, and Moon is here to provide the soundtrack.

The songs are strong and individual.  It is not so much an album but a collection of singles.  A ‘greatest hits’ waiting to happen.  Each song could be a single and this may be the kind of album that fans may choose to buy individual tracks rather than purchasing or listening to it straight through.  In Chrome’s case, this will work.  It does not have to be listened to as an album.  Each song is strong enough to stand on its own.

Overall, a great album.  Perfect for the late summer evenings and those parties we’re are all about to host come autumn. This is well crafted dance pop and all the songs are prime for remixes (“Sound”, the first single, has already been remixed to great success).

Betty Moon has come back strong with this great album of pop and dance, with a lot of electronica thrown in for good measure.  Looking to escape the bad news of the world, this just may be the music to help you succeed.
