SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BUZZI – BLACK WATERS

Buzzi

Buzzi
Black Waters
Afterwave Records
RATING

Afterwave Records, run by Brooklyn artists Krames and William B, released their second EP in their underground techno sturm und drang collection on November 4, 2016 with Brooklyn artist Buzzi’s debut EP Black Waters. Cuban- Peruvian, Bushwick born and raised Jose Buzzi opened Afterwave Records’ first Technoscope Compilation (October 21, 2016) gaining some plays on KCRW for his “stripped-back and spellbinding” “Grains Of Sand” ft. Human A. Continuing in his signature menacing sound, Buzzi builds in the German sturm und drang style with a steady, dark rising sound on Black Waters. Described as “delicate, albeit dark, atmospheres” Black Waters’ three tracks feature cascading synths, clashing hi-hats and “full-throttle percussion.” “Die Drohnen” (“The Drones”) is the longest and most repetitive of the three tracks – a late night drop that “gets in your head with hazy, hypnotizing loops and low, buzzing atmospheres.” My favourite track is the EP closer, “Two Dimensions,” which feels like a steady pulsing ride along the autobahn late at night with a momentary plunge into black waters. “Menacing” and “hypnotic” can describe Buzzi’s music. Unlike “Grains of Sand”, Black Waters is shadowy, upbeat and captivating.

”Who in their right mind would enter black waters?” Buzzi says on his release. “I mean think about it. You don’t know what’s in there. You don’t know how deep it is. Completely dark and unknown. Scary shit but I’m still curious. This is a trip into those waters. The overall sound is dark and deep – once you dive in you get lost. The listener and dancer is taken to a place of horror, ecstasy, turbulence, shelter, freedom, and eeriness.”

Afterwave Records will be offering a new release every month on the new imprint.
