SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DONOVAN WOODS – THEY ARE GOING AWAY EP

Donovan Woods

Donovan Woods
They Are Going Away EP
Meant Well
RATING

“The songs are about coping with loss, and wholesale changes, that sort of thing. The title, I suppose, is trying to get at the temporariness of everything. Time speeds up when you get older, that’s an observable fact. It starts to feel like you’re always chasing some ineffable thing. It’s why your dad often had a slightly bewildered look in his eyes.” – Donovan Woods

Donovan Woods’ They Are Going Away EP (Meant Well) releases September 23, featuring three songs originally intended for his 2016 album Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled. The final track, “Empty Rooms,” is a new song that fits the overall tone, a reflection on the dismantling of a relationship, and blends in nicely with the others.

A strong companion to his full-length album, these songs feature ruminations on love, loneliness, and ambivalence toward the future. There is a clear sense of movement to the collection, a series of road-trippin’ behind-the-wheel ballads that are sure to give you itchy feet. “What They Mean” stands out, a catchy tune about a father driving in his car, attempting to explain the preoccupations in love songs to his curious child sitting in the back seat.

Woods’ talents as a songwriter and in-demand recording artist are demonstrated in this latest EP. His songs feature down-to-earth, relatable lyrics and strong notes of Country, Folk, and Pop influences. All these forces combine to create a memorable and lasting impact on his listeners.

Woods has a string of Canadian headline dates coming up. Check his website to find a tour date near you.
