Moniker is a multi-purpose thing in music, one could be to make a distinction from other artists, particularly in a very crowded genre, and singer-songwriter one is possibly at the top of that list. Yet the key distinction there should be and is in a music such a monikered artist makes, and North Carolina’s Canon Pence who creates music as Twilark can be listed among those that can make a distinction with their music.

His latest album Never Learned the Tide and its 12 songs have all the elements that can set it out – strong, detailed songwriting, with lyrics to songs like “No Cowboy Song” and “Prettiest Way to Die” ranging from Townes Van Zandt to Bonnie Prince Billie, with the simple, but detailed arrangements also standing out.
At the same time, Pence’s songs have all those characteristics that fit squarely within the singer songwriter leaning to Americana qualities that fans of the genre cherish close to their hearts.
