The title of Bruno Berle’s latest (third) album says it all: Sem Fronteiras, meaning ‘without Borders.’

While many listeners not so familiar with modern Brazilian music might think that it is all bossa nova, samba or Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). Brazilian Popular Music actually includes it all and goes everywhere, while at the same time keeping the key elements of the musical forms that originated in Brazil itself.

And while many current Brazilian artists pick elements of modern Western pop in big chunks and fit them into their music, Berle actually uses single musical elements from elsewhere only as embellishments to enrich and expand his Brazilian roots, whether it is the ‘original’ Bossa or its later Tropicalia variant that itself already was growing and expanding.

Berle’s results here go from excellent to brilliant without flinching and keeping it all in the ‘usual’ pop song format with nothing less than impressive results.
