Some would say that singer-songwriters are dime-a-dozen these days (again!), and the proliferation is certainly there, but there seems to be a deeper thematic shift compared to the initial singer-songwriter heyday of the early mid-70s.
That deeper connotation concerns that the lyrics now center on more general themes, connecting the personal relation of an artist to themes that are not solely introvert but can give a listener more connecting points.

For NYC singer-songwriter Jackie West, the themes of her second album, Silent Century are all about connecting her identity and femininity with personal healing, as she puts it, from a history of gendered silencing toward a state of individual sovereignty and creative freedom.

Sure, it could all become somewhat pretentious if it wasn’t backed by some substantial lyrics and quite good songwriting. Luckily, West shines in both respects on this album.
