KENNYHOOPLA SHARES “BIRTHDAY CARD//” VIDEO FROM ‘CONDITIONS OF AN ORPHAN//’ DELUXE EP
| THE ORCHARD
HEADLINE UK TOUR DATES KICK OFF THIS WEEK
Last week, KennyHoopla dropped the deluxe version of his widely loved EP conditions of an orphan// via The Orchard featuring two new singles and today, shares a video for one of the songs: “birthday card//”—highlighting his signature dance, punk instrumentation, and vulnerability as he reflects on his past. Directed by Brittany Young, the visual was shot in chilly Wisconsin, honoring Kenny’s midwest roots and style, noting “the video represents a postcard and matches the spontaneity of the song.”
The release of conditions of an orphan// produced with Paramore’s Zac Farro and Mike Elizondo (Turnstile, 50 Cent), sees Kenny returning to music with a raw approach, digging deeper than ever into themes of grief, revenge, trauma, and love across its five tracks. The addition of “ooshalala//” and “birthday card//” into this universe perfectly fits with his journey thus far, drawing inspiration from the buzzsaw indie rock sound of the 2000s—from vintage classic acts like The Drums and New Order to Rapture’s spiky rhythms and Franz Ferdinand’s suave effervescence.
As Kenny tells it, the creation of these songs and subsequent collaborations was re-energizing for his artistic spirit. “It’s like I’m back on my feet for the first time and standing up to fight again,” he says. But even as he exhibits boldness, there’s vulnerability; behind the driving dance-punk of popular lead single “orphan//”—as well as the EP title itself— is a gesture towards his mother’s passing three years ago, as well as ruminations on isolation and the act of finding yourself while also yearning to be supported.
Following his tour supporting Soft Play on the West Coast leg of their tour and headline shows in Boston, D.C. Brooklyn, and more, KennyHoopla will head across the pond for a string of almost-sold-out tour dates in the UK this week.
