PELVIS WRESTLEY – “HOLY HOST”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Pelvis Wrestley began in the Fall of 2018 and set out to adapt Benjamin Violet’s synth pop background to the country music format to help redefine an American identity. Releasing their debut record, Vortexas Vorever, in February 2023, their unique brand of western-infused synth music garnered attention at home and abroad. NPR affiliate, KUTX, named the pop gem, “In Heaven”, song of the day in celebration of its release. They later named Pelvis Wrestley artist of the month in June, following the release of their record. Finding its legs, the record caught the attention of baroque pop royalty, Kishi Bashi, who called it “An electronic melody coaster ride through every 80’s classic flick you missed out on. Hints of Springsteen, James Mercer and The Cars. Best served now.”
In Violet’s own words regarding the electronic-to-country adaptation, “I started Pelvis Wrestley with the simple concept that identity is a two-way street: you may tell from my outfit that I am a cowboi, but the fact that I am a cowboi changes what cowbois are. I can tell from your last name that you are a Smith, but the fact that you are a Smith changes who the Smiths are. I can tell from your flag that you are American, but the fact that you are American changes what America is. The work of Pelvis Wrestley is to alter identity markers by claiming and participating in them in order to subvert their direction and meaning in the larger world.”
ARTIST QUOTE
Written and produced by Benjamin Violet and mixed by Drew Vandenberg (Of Montreal, Deerhunter, Future Birds, etc.), “Holy Host” is a nostalgic, full synth-pop anthem. Regarding the song, Violet wrote: “Some say that God is love. By the transitive property, Love is god, and when anyone does Love, they approach Godhood. This is a song about participating in godhood. I wrote it for someone that I’m not in love with anymore, but I think we had godhood, and I also think the person I was in love with has godhood, because we had Love!”
