PETER JOE HULMES – UNIVERSAL JUVENILE: IN SEARCH OF KIM MITCHELL
INDEPENDENT
BOOK REVIEW BY TONY STUART
In Peter Hulmesβ own words, Universal Juvenile βis a tale of one manβs love of another manβs music and how that passion resulted in a life-long journey to meet and emulate a hero.β
The hero in question is Kim Mitchell, and besides falling in love with Mitchellβs music, Hulmes, a citizen of the UK, also details his love of Canada. This book traces his journey from adoring superfan to lead singer in a Max Webster/Kim Mitchell tribute band to meeting his hero in person.
Hulmes has created an engaging narrative, and each chapter in the book has ties to a Max Webster or Kim Mitchell album. In a clever bit of wordplay, he incorporates lyrics from a Kim Mitchell song at the end of each chapter.
This attention to detail is a strong point for Universal Juvenile. As Hulmes points out, Max Webster and Kim Mitchell are not exactly household names in the UK, which makes the premise of a British citizen obsessed with Kim Mitchell that much more unusual.
Hulmes meets all of the criteria for being a superfan, and his all-consuming devotion to collecting every Kim Mitchell album and video, seeing him in concert, and finally meeting him in person are lovingly detailed. His passion for the subject matter shines through, with liberal doses of humour sprinkled throughout.
Every hero has a quest, and Hulmesβ quest in Universal Juvenile makes for an engaging and lighthearted read.
