The Saxophones
Eternity Bay
Full Time Hobby
Back in the β50s and early β60s, ballrooms and dance halls were in vogue. One of the popular features during dance nights was the so-called βladiesβ choiceβ, when the girls would pick their dancing partners. It was usually a very slow lovers tune. The girls could then show who is their actual pick.Β
San Francisco husband and wife duo The Saxophones (Alexi Erenkov, Alison Alderdice) probably do not remember these days but they certainly know the music. It could be the old scratched records or a healthy dose of David Lynch movies, as Lynch and his soundtrack writer Angelo Badalamenti certainly favour this sound. In any case, their second album Eternity Bay sounds like an all-night βladiesβ choiceβ.
And what a great ladiesβ choice it is! Both Erenkov and Alderdice have voices perfectly suited for the sound, a combination of latter-day Sinatra, exotica, and a surf guitar twang, all garnered with Erenkovβs great woodwinds. No wander, Erenkov was a former jazz student.
Whether it is βNew Tabooβ, βForgot My Mantraβ or βAnymoreβ, The Saxophones create a sound that is slow as molasses, but has an almost perfect ebb and flow that can keep those slow dances in any shape and form going all night long. No wonder they are releasing this one on Valentineβs Day.
