THE DONNAS
SPEND THE NIGHT
REAL GONE MUSIC
One of the most influential punk bands of the 90s, The Donnas, exuded a rebellious energy that was often likened to the female version of the Ramones. Their high school persona, which revolved around boys, booze, drugs, and disdain for classmates, was a powerful expression of rebellion, much like their predecessors, The Runaways.
These four ambitious gals from California, with their rebellious spirit, released seven studio albums during their reign in the punk rock pop scene. Their influence was so significant that in 2023, The Donnas Early Years 1995-1999 was released, a testament to their impact. The tracklist included their first single, “High School Yum Yum” to their REO cover “Keep On Loving You.”
However, it’s Spend The Night that truly stands out, and brings the unique sound that once captivated audiences. This album, first released in 2002, brought mainstream success with notable singles “Take It Off” and “Who Invited You”.
Listening to Spend The Night instantly transports you back to those high school slumber parties with your gal pals and the antics that unfolded when boredom struck. How many of you snuck out the window in search of some thrills? Come on now, spill the secrets!
In the catchy track “Take it Off” from the album, talented lead singer Brett Anderson passionately expresses her desire for a guy. The dynamic vocals seamlessly blend with the energetic guitar and drumbeats, showcasing the powerful musical experience for the LP.
Spend The Night radiates a raw rock essence, a delightful detour from the today’s music realm. It carries a hint of that vengeful spirit, and this track uniquely captures the vintage party rock vibe of bands like Cheap Trick. Infused with the rebellious energy of rock icon Joan Jett, this album still stands out in today’s music landscape.
Some critics were quick to point out the similarities in The Donnas’ songs and albums. Let’s give those critics a reality check – ever jam out to an AC/DC LP? Since back in the day, female artists have always had to fight twice as hard for recognition and fair treatment in the music world. Yet, The Donnas have totally flipped the script by keeping their music alive and kicking, earning well-deserved love and respect along the way.
