Behind the Sagittaire moniker is one Ivan Mairesse, LA musician who, judging by his latest album Lucian & Caroline, has some deep and wide artistic interest that stretches beyond music.

Mairesse bases the album on the real-life love affair of painter Lucian Freud and writer Lady Caroline Blackwood. Very often, such concept albums go astray, burdened by high ambitions not matched either by the quality of music or lyrics. But Mairesse actually manages himself quite admirably in both aspects, dressing his thematic lyrics in some high-quality trip-hop that has admirable arrangements (“Orchestral Piece” for example) that often juxtaposes acoustic and electronic elements as a musical metaphor for the attraction of opposites, something Mairesse went for in his lyrics, making the two an excellent match.
